Subtitles in other languages than english!
I'm Spanish and I am a PS3 user. There are no movies in my language on MUBI, neither spoken voice nor subtitled, fact which is terribly annoying and makes everybody I know to automatically uninstall MUBI on their consoles. I think this project is a very good idea but perhaps you should take more care offering an international service in some countries without any content on their native languages. They are just subtitles, almost all movies in the world have subtitles translated to any language, it should take little effort for you to get them from official sources.

willyk0, we hear you loud and clear! Adding more subtitle options, so people can easily pick their language of choice, is a big part of our dream for MUBI. This is a bit tricky, not just for technical reasons, but legal reasons as well: subtitles are actually not as simple as they seem.
Believe it or not, different distributors may own the rights to subtitles in different languages. So just because we have the right to distribute a film around the world doesn't necessarily mean we have the right to a Spanish-subtitled version.
But rest assured, this is one of our major priorities. Our goal for MUBI is a completely versatile and multilingual moviegoing service. We're working towards this, and we look forward to bringing more subtitled versions to Spain (and everywhere around the world) as soon as we can!

Thank you for writing in, willyk0. May I ask, what country are you using MUBI from? Is it Spain?

so you just gotta charge costomer from the country he-she wants the subtitle. You gotta open a lil branch to other countries so you can bill from there.

Also, could you study the possibility of having a button to remove subtitles? sometimes watching subtitles in films in languages you understand is quite distracting.

According to you, it may be possible to allow a link/agreement with subtitles web user-generated engines (for example, opensubtitles.org, subbie etc.) without contrasting legal reasons of distributors?

Dear yamamotokoji,
We have been actually approached by a professional body that is looking into possibilities of user-generated subtitle communities. Legally, it is however more complicated than what it could seem. First we need subtitles to exist, then if they exist we need to clear the rights for them. We cannot just create subtitles and put them on the films and show it. For example if most of the films we show in Spain don't have Spanish subtitles it is because the people who gave us the rights for them don't have Spanish subtitles (they don't exist or they exist but these people don't have the rights to use them). This means that even if our users would create the subtitles we would still need to obtain rights to use them by an agreement with distributors to whom belong the rights of particular film.
I hope this sheds some light on the issue.
Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.
All the best,
Pawel

I’m
sorry!
Dear Jorawantstoeat,
I am sorry but due to legal and technical reasons we can not show spanish subtitled films in non spanish speaking countries. We want to change this, but that won't happen in the near future I am afraid.
Best regards,
Maximilian
