Hi,
I've just downloaded the most recent update to the PS3 app (hoping it was going to fix some of these streaming issues that have rendered it almost unusable) and it now causes ALL movies to play in a squashed 4:3 ratio in the middle of my widescreen TV. I have checked all the inapp settings and the cannes cinema club plays correctly in widescreen format but even movies that are in widescreen now play compressed. I'm not sure what to do about this problem.
I'm quite dissatisfied with mubi at the moment, I used to watch fine through my PS3 until you changed streaming methods and as I dislike watching on my laptop I've found it very difficult to continue using the service. This coupled with the (unannounced) introduction of premium pricing on top of subscription costs leave me leaning towards cancelling altogether :(

The Sony engineers have reported that there have been no changes to the video playback in the latest build. Are you sure it happened with the latest patch? When was the last time you saw it working?
Additionally they tested a number of videos playing on a 1080p television and were unable to reproduce the problem.
What display resolution they are using, PAL-16:9, 720p, 1080p or 1080i?
And also can you list as many films as you have specifically tested that you can verify are displaying with an incorrect aspect ratio? -

I'm pretty sure it happened with the last build as it downloaded just before opened the app and began trying to play videos. I haven't used the app for awhile and it's possible I only watched films in a native 4:3 ratio last time I did use it. I was happening with all the films I tried to watch last night, I tried several but the ones I clearly remember are Lala Pipo and Little Red Riding Hood (2008) - I have just tried both of these now and the problem is still there although I have tried a few other films which have played fine. The PS3 is set to output in 1080p
It did report 'updating' when I opened it earlier could that have solved some of the problems - lala pipo and Little Red Riding Hood still don't display correctly though? -

Alright I'm forwarding these assets onto the Sony team for analysis. Sorry for the delay, Diamond Jubilee and all...

Okay it appears the Sony player can not handle non-square aspect ratio pixels, which occur in some of our videos. This problem has always existed, so it's probably just bad luck that you are seeing some of the videos that are using non-square aspect ratio pixels at this time. We are evaluating the scope of the problem and will work on re-encoding.
Thanks,
Gabe -
