9 months ago I posted this suggestion on a pre-Mubi forum (Help make The Auteurs totally awesome):
3 options for better worldwide usability:
subtitles language choice
original language subtitles for every movie, English included
subtitles on/off switch
and here is Mr. Efe Cakarel (Founder & CEO @ The Auteurs) answer:
Hello Ivan,
I agree with you. We are going to significantly increase the availability of our films in multiple subtitles towards the end of the year.
End of December now..

Thank you for the feedback! For your three suggestions, we agree entirely: these our some of our most desired upgrades. Unfortunately, the task is a bit complicated, not just for technical reasons, but for legal reasons as well, since different distributors often own the rights to different subtitles. (For instance, our partner Criterion only publishes their DVDs with English subtitles because, in most cases, that's all they have the rights for). But while it may have taken us a bit longer than we thought, it's still high on our radar, and hopefully it can be ready before long!

Ivan_F December 14, 2010 13:40Thanks Duncan for your fast reply. In your answer there's a first solution of a part of this matter: if Criterion own the rights for English subs.. you could easily make them available! A lot of people are not really used to listening to films in English without some aid of subtitles, and I’m pretty sure there are a lot of people with hearing issues that would appreciate English subtitles.EditDeleteRemove

Hi Ivan. We are slowly rolling out more subtitle options as we are able to legally acquire them and technically implement them.

First I'd like to thank you for providing a fantastic service. The only function I lack is the ability to choose the language of the subtitles. I live in Sweden and I think it's great that you provide subtitles in Swedish for some titles. However, depending on the film I'd love to be able to easily change the subtitles from Swedish to either English, Japanese or Chinese. Will this function be available at any point in the future?

I live in Belgium. My Main language is german and the second language for subtitles should be either french or english. But they are all in netherlands!!!
please change this default setting.
Thank You very much, Andreas -

I'm traveling around the world and living in Berlin (It's why I reactive my account, I was thinking that was the solution to get good movies in VO)....
I can read French and English, but when I'm in Germany I always get German subtitle. This is useless for me and specially frustrating on a French movie!
I was so excited :(. I guess I'm back to torrents for now...
Can you send the subtitle in text instead of inside the actual image... at least we can activated/desactivate them? -

Hello Simon,
At the moment this feature is not available I'm afraid. This is however one of our biggest concerns and something definitely on the radar for futures upgrades. The difficulty in implementing it is twofold; not only a technical like developing new version of our player to support selectable subtitles but also legal. Local distributors own the rights to screen a subtitled version of the film in particular territory.
Please let us know if there is anything else we may help with.
All the best,
Pawel

ok but at least movies should always be available in original version with no subtitle.

Hello again,
Agreed. However this requires a serious rebuilding of our entire infrastructure - switching to new technology and re-encoding all available content. This will take a lot of work and our development team is busy with other projects, but hopefully we can have a solution ready in the near future.
Thank you for your patience and do let us know if there is anything else we may help with.
All the best,
Pawel

Maybe an odd question, but it seems I cannot choose any language?/

Hello Arie Leijen,
The language of the subtitles is not selectable. The film plays with the subtitles provided for the particular territory. What are they is shown just below the title of the film on the right-hand side of the still.
Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.
All the best,
Pawel
