Half star ratings
It would be great to rate a movie with half stars too!

A like system is fine for places like YouTube, where its members will hit and run with a 1 or a 5 (rarely anything in between) because they don't care about whatever they're rating enough to give it any thought other than it was awesome or it sucked. I think the members at Mubi are a lot better than that. A half star or a 10 star system is really needed.

I don't want MUBI Facebook!
I don't want MUBI Twitter!
I don't want it on PS3!
I don't want it on Wii!
I don't want this kind of thing!
I WANT The Auteurs BACK!!!
The new homepage is disgusting! OK, the search is now kinda better! But the recommendations? There are movies that I have watched! AND RATED! And it's still recommended? Well thanks! But I've already seen it! You have so many great recommendations on what to do with the site... and none of them have seen the daylight
I agree with Johnny C - MUBI is kinda loosing it! And to think that I replaced iMDb for Auteurs for a while... and now... so sad... -
@Wilyrah. Hmm, I'm seriously beginning to wonder if these guys know what the hell they're doing. I hope somebody in this company has a copy of "Four Steps to the Epiphany".
I would have thought that the movie version of E-Music would have been enough, but it seems they're hell-bent on trying to make the site "social"... We're not paying for the "social", we're paying to be able to watch good, rare movies on demand... Except you can't even find the movies you might want to watch, because their searching/filtering systems are so poor.
I don't think Mubi is going to be around for much longer, it seems they don't know what they're doing or why. -
MUBI is changing the layout, adding "comment" and "like" buttons - to do like facebook, such a shame - but they do not seem to consider this half-star suggestion despite its popularity :(

The inability for users to vote in half-star increments is possibly the only gripe I have with the site. Definitely something to look into implementing.
[i said i was 'excited' a year ago. now i am disgustingly disappointed, with all the other changes you have implemented i still cannot rate USING HALF STARS, which makes absolutely no sense. what is the point of this site then? honestly pathetic]

Seems crazy to me that the site does not already support an "out of 10" ratings system. Implementing a half star system would solve the issue of users feeling uneasy about being overgenerous or indeed, too tight with their ratings.
I am definitely an advocate of the 5 star system though, and think it feels simple and definitely looks "shiny". The site would feel too clunky using an alternative such as a percentage or 10 star system. Half stars are the obvious route to go here. Good to know the idea is being considered, anyway. -

This would change the whole course of my Mubian universe! Really, I've come used to rating with the current system.

Yes, that's what we've been waiting for a long time: The half-star! But I disagree on that 10-star system.

This is a standard practice, why have the not applied this to the site!? Ridiculous and frustrating...

Hello,
I would like to suggest you to add an half star rating system.
There are lots of films which i would like to rate 3 and 1/2 instead of 3, and so on...
I don't use mubi very much because I think it's impossible to use an integer rating system...
I don't think I'm the first person asking this. I hope you'll take in consideration my idea...
Thanks ;)

Why don't you add an half star rating system?. -

It seems as if the idea is growing and growing, time to implement, yes?

The number of comments here increased 50% in just one day. Look at us, Mubi! Please!

It's far more complicated than that, Uli, but rest assured we are looking into it!

C'mon people. Grow up. They said they are working on it. I'm pretty sure you are all able to survive a bit longer with the full star system we have. for now.
Also, adding the 'like' and 'comment' buttons was requested by users like myself as that makes the whole experience of watching a film more social and interactive and that's something some of us actually like and want. It has nothing to do with Facebook or any other social network. Try to think outside the box, will you.
All of this just goes to show that the mubi team did make use of the feedback we have been providing, so they'll most likely implement soon the half star rating system, too. don't know what's with all the rush, so please chill and stop spamming my inbox. (I know, I know, I did the same by posting this).
Thank you. -

Adding all kinds of junk to the site is just going to devolve it into the slow, unhelpful, and ugly monstrosities we have from every other site out there. imdb is literally un-usable now, a gross example of being obsessed with change and tweaking and having a desperate need to continually write new code. mubi is as solid now as it ever needs to be, it just needs to continue its catalog expansion of watchable films, and overall expansion of its film database. The box is airtight right now, in this unique case thinking outside of it is ultimately going to destroy it.

@Ciprian, It's probably best not to insult the people you're trying to win over to your side of an argument. Also, it might not be best to perpetuate something you say you don't want continuing.
I appreciate that you like the social aspects of Mubi, and that's fine, but you don't seem to fully understand what's upsetting people. A 'Like' button REPLACES the current star rating system. For example: YouTube used to have a 5 star rating system, like Mubi, but they discovered that 90% of all votes were either 1 star or 5 stars, so they changed it to the 'Like'/'Dislike' system they have now.
If Wilyrah is right, they're replacing the current system for a more simplistic one like on YouTube.
Also, I've search through this 'Help' forum, including all your posts, and I couldn't find a single request (or mention) from anyone asking for the rating system to be replaced with a 'Like' system.
If should be worth mentioning that adding a _Facebook_ Like system to each film shouldn't take a competent developer more than a day (and hopefully half a day), so I'm assuming that's not what we're talking about. I'm also assuming we're not talking about a 'Favorites' system, given that it's apparently a 'Like' one.
Of course, we only have Wilyrah's say here. -
-
@ Johnny : I'm not saying that they are replacing the current system. I'm just saying that I find that it was very dispensable or superfluous and I regret that the half-stars rating system is still not planned.
As you said, no one seems to have asked for a LIKE button, whereas the half-stars rating is the most popular idea here.
They want to make MUBI more social, fine, it could be a good thing. But it could also lead to reduce the quality of mubi's content and layout. I'm just saying. My purpose is not to criticize, but to give a constructive opinion.
But I'm trying to be optimistic and confident, I still hope a half-stars rating system will come, one day. Not too far. -
-
@Johnny C Walker: I was referring to the 'like' and 'comment' options that were introduced when other people write a comment on a film. Nobody mentioned anything about a 'like/dislike' system to rate the films. I think it's clear we'll have the same star system rating for that. The only issue is if they are changing it to a half star rating system or not. and when.
Also, I did not insult anyone. That's was not the purpose of my post.
It's fun to see that people who complain about this don't even know what they're complaining about actually. Just sayin'. -

The best thing would be to get a more precise/accurate answer from MUBI, something like :
- we will do it very soon
- we are actually going to do it, but not yet because we have a lot to do right now
- we don't know if we are going to do it, we have to discuss it
- we are not going to do it -
-
Ciprian, if you're going to insult people, the least you can do is apologize when you're called on it.
Apologies if I misunderstood the hoohah of 'Like' buttons, but it seemed only logical in a discussion about Film Rating Systems that someone bringing up a discussion about alternate Rating Systems... would be talking about Film. I've no idea why there's any discussion about Comments here, as this isn't the place.
One thing is clear, though, the majority of users of this site don't care so much about the social content, as much as they do about being able to find the film they want to watch. -

Can we also get the option of giving a movie Zero stars? There are definitely some clunkers for which even one star or half a star is to generous.

How can an idea with nearly 40 more people wanting it than the next idea still only be Under Consideration?
-
-
I personally LOVE that it is JUST a 1-5 system. People are so indecisive these days, the fact that I have to choose one score or another makes me more certain of the rating. Make it a half star if it calms the indecisive, but don't alter the beauty that is a 5 star system just for them.
Don't add facebook likes, creating a dependence on another social network site. Keep it as is! -
-
I support the half stars rating. Especially 3.5 and 4.5. Otherwise I don't think people need 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, isn't it? So, any news?

agreed!

a very good point, really... it's also very nice that's already in the "ideas under consideration" section...
but pretty bad it's nearly a year since the idea came..! :-/
so go on for this please ! :)) -

Half-star system is a must, maybe after this has been "under consideration" for 5 years? I know it's a "tough call" and all that but uh... what gives?
-
-
Sometimes a movie is so awful it doesn't even deserve a half-star but zero stars. Take that for consideration Mubi.
-
-
One of the things I've wanted since joining this site. It forces a lot of films with similar star ratings to be on the same level that I don't think are of equal value necessarily. Especially my fourth star category, which would probably have a lot more 3.5's and 4.5's if I could do so.
